Is Max with you? [ he had taken off in a hurry, but he has to assume max made it to karen's room after he'd left the bar. ]

Is something wrong?

[She knows that he trusts Max to come back to him, so he likely is only asking because something might possibly be up.]

He's with me, safe in my room.

[ which isn't cryptic at all right?? he sounds relieved at her assurance though. ]

I'm coming up.

Are you going to tell me what happened or are you going to make me force it out of you?

[He knows that her door's open for him, so she doesn't add that on.]

So I realized today that I haven't seen you or talked to you in like forever which is weird. We totally have mutual friends! Why don't we ever hang out???

Is it because you're solving mysteries? Frank told me all about how you're awesome at it. If you need to get back to that, totally fine by me. I just thought I'd say hi. :))

I'm trying to figure out door codes but wouldn't mind some company. You can tell me all the things Frank's said about me while we hang out.

Sounds like a plan! But, only if you tell me what he says about me. There's no way he's not gossiping about his weird neighbor. I want all the deets.

I'll tell you everything, but trust me when I say that he hasn't said anything but good things.

[ miller and karen are both leaving their rooms at the same time, which is odd. she usually is a "morning person" much to his chagrin. which is to say she's still up from the night before so he can't actually take too much of an issue with it. his hat is on his head at a angle, hair that's starting to grow out messily curling at his nape. and there's one thing of note she may not have seen on his person before - his rhino, jammed unceremoniously into the back pocket of his jumpsuit.

he freezes when max issues a low growl in warning, turning and lifting his hands so the dog doesn't get any ideas. ]

Hey there, partner. Just taking my legs for a spin. Surely that's not against the law? [ he lifts his eyebrows after addressing the dog and meets karen's eyes. they clearly say: please don't let me get eaten today thanks. ]

[subplot]

[Since she had that nice night of restless sleep with Frank, she feels like she doesn't need to sleep every other night. She's on her way to the mess hall to get something that slightly resembles coffee and some food for Max. Seeing Miller leaving his room at the same time as her isn't that surprising. He keeps hours similar to her own.

Max's growling earns a gentle hand placed atop his head, and she gives a soft command for him to stand down. Whether or not he'll listen, she's not sure. He's just as protective of her as Frank is, and tends to not do well with men he doesn't know yet. ]

Max, Miller is a friend. He won't hurt us.

[Her eyebrows arch expectantly, almost as if she expects him to explain to the dog that he's not a threat at all. At the same time, her hand slips to gently grab hold of Max's collar. It's more a safety precaution than anything.]

[pampa]

[ he takes a half step towards her and max starts barking. he blows out a breath, trying not to let it effect him- ] Won't hurt you, maybe. Maybe he's never seen a Belter before, like I've never seen a dog. [ he looks from the dog and back to karen. he hangs out with naomi so no, miller. your nationality isn't the issue. ]

What's his problem?

You've never seen a dog before?

[Well, she guesses that makes sense. She's always just assumed that everyone's seen dogs their entire lives. Max barks and she crouches down carefully, her dress making it feel awkward.]

He doesn't like men very much. It takes him time to warm up to them, especially if he thinks they might hurt me. Maybe you should take off the hat and let him see your face.

[WAit a second, that might be a bad idea.]

Slowly.

[Because if Max really wants to attack, like hell she'll be able to hold him back.]

[She's not exactly surprised to see this un pop up but wonders if there's a reason he's decided to message her from it. Maybe he's still doing his whole avoiding her thing. She's given him the space he wants for the past five days, mostly because she's so busy doing her own door opening thing.]

What happened to Elektra? Is she alright?

Frank, just tell me who it is and what happened. I'm not really in the position to play guessing games right now.

While I'm at it, hello. How are you? [She barely restrains herself from adding I miss you, but that's a bit much, she thinks.]

I've been busy. [You know, with Matt showing up and her working on her things like she has no life. Which she doesn't.]

I've missed having you around. So go ahead, tell me the riddle.

[How distressing could it be?]

I've missed you too. Here it goes: if a woman died twice, is buried once, and there's no signs of trauma on her body to reflect any of those things, she cannot recall them either, did it actually happen?

Totally random, but I talked to Frank about a lot of stuff that happened with you guys back home. You know serious stuff like the trial and government conspiracies. I know you didn't do any of that stuff to be praised, but I wanted you to know that I'm really proud of you. It's really hard to stand up for anyone especially after they do crazy stuff like shoot at you. You did. You saved him even though he didn't give you much of a reason to.

I think you're a good person and an even better friend. I hope someday I can be as brave and kind as you are. I just wanted you to know that's what I took from all that craziness.

I helped Frank because it was the right thing to do. He wasn't the monster they were trying to make him out to be. If he had wanted me dead that day he shot at me, I wouldn't be here right now. But he's not the kind of man that kills people who don't deserve it. What he did to the people he did kill? I think he probably does deserve to be in prison if you look at it from a legal perspective, but I learned a little before I met him that you can't depend on the legal system to do the right thing. It's just as corrupt as the people Frank killed in the name of revenge.

I'm not as good as you think I am, Kamala. Do you want to know the reason Frank and I connected so quickly when we took on his case? Frank has a lot of darkness inside him. Something inside of me is the same. Things have happened to me, horrible things. I've killed someone before. It's been my fault that other people have died. So please, don't want to be like me. You're so much more brave than I could ever be. Do you know how strong you are to be able to survive here at sixteen?

[morphogenia]

[That effectively broke her rose-colored glasses re: Karen.] I... didn't know any of that stuff about you or even suspect it. Frank basically has dark backstory written on his forehead. You? Wow. I... really didn't see this coming. I'm not really sure what to say.

Careful, I'm not sure Frank wants anyone to know that he's capable of being happy. Do I want to know what made you and Matt get on the topic of his being a housewife?

He shouldn't look so pleased with himself while he's knitting then.

And I wish I knew. He just said he wanted to quit and spend time with me. It sounds very serious.
